Q. What are the key differences between the various types of border edging?
Viny - Plastic:
The easiest edging border to install. Simply slice cuts next to paving with a spade and press or stake the vinyl - plastic in place. KEEP YOUR MOWER AWAY FROM THIS MATERIAL!
Brick:
Moderate to expensive, depending on the type you select.
You can save money with Pre-used brick if you are willing to take the time to chip off old mortar to create your mower strip.
Preformed concrete blocks:
Moderate cost, but the preparation to get them to lay in a straight line is a nightmare, so unless you intend to lay them yourself, the cost for a landscaper to do it for you, will cripple you. (Very expensive)
Extruded concrete: Kwik Edging - continuous coloured concrete kerb.
Moderate cost, attractive, durable, fits all design contours, fast installation.
Metal or rubber strips:
Are less attractive, but they are inexpensive and serviceable.
Timber:
Inexpensive to Moderate, depending whether you use timber strips or sleepers.
Easy to work with, rots over a short time, and needs to be replaced every few years.
P.S. The white ants love timber.
Fibreglass:
Inexpensive to Moderate, Looks good initially, but after a few years in the sun becomes very brittle, and is easy to break, so keep your mower and whipper snipper away from it.
Note:
Remember, cost, durability, installation, personal preference are all factors that will help determine the type of edging used in your garden.
